Title Research: 2001: A Space Odyssey

What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?

- During the Opening sequence, there is, at first, nothing. Then, about 45 seconds in, we get to see the first name. That name is Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the company who made this movie. The next name, which appears soon after, is that of Stanley Kubrick, the producer of the movie. Finally, we see the title screen. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? -In the opening sequence, the first image is an all black screen. Eventually, we see a big white circle begin to appear, and we realize that it is actually a planet. We slowly move up from the original black screen (which is actually a planet), and more unto the white circle with some light behind it. What connotations do these images carry? - These images carry an interesting connotation, as they are beautiful and gives us an image to look at, leaving the audience in awe at the images and the music especially. However, there is also the fact that these images are quite mysterious. The audience is left to wonder many things, such as for example "Why are we seeing this? It is beautiful, but what is its meaning?". How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset? - As discussed above, the film gives a sense of mystery similar, yet also different from the other films listed in the other blogs. This movie not a murder mystery, or a slasher villain with an unknown backstory. This film is all about exploration, and invites the audience to think while they are in awe of the planets and music of the film. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

-The film gives off a sense of mystery by not revealing the plot or distracting the audience with dialogue. Space Odyssey's audience is mostly young and old people, who are fascinated by space, science-fiction, or mystery. This introduction, as stated above, is bland, but in a good way. There is almost no text, only the image of space, with its powerful music. How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques. - The technology was used quite effectively, considering the movie is 53 years old. The effects are still beautiful, and the camera upwards movement is so steady and seamless that the transition effect works extremely well.
