Genre Research: Thriller and Action
Thriller- The thriller genre is subordinate to the horror film genre. Thriller movies have more of a psychological effect on the audience with suspense. What makes thriller movies a top genre in theaters is the CAMS and CLAMPS used.
CAMS
High Angle- This shot is used to show the audience a group of people that are powerless.
Close-up shots- Close-up shots are used in thriller films to show more detail of a character or place.
Point of view shot- This camera shot is for the audience to feel the suspense of a thriller film from a character's perspective.
Over the shoulder shot- This shot is used to see a character's facial expressions from a single character's perspective. This builds up suspense in the film.
Low angle shot- This camera shot is used to show the audience the dominance of the villain in a thriller film.
CLAMPS
Setting- Settings for thriller films are usually spooky places such as a dark forest, haunted house, or a small village.
Low Key lighting- This lighting is used to create a sinister setting that creates a suspenseful atmosphere.
Clothing- Dark color clothing helps represent the dark tone of the film.
Props- Violent weapons to show the audience the terrifying themes of a thriller movie.
Acting- Acting used in thriller films bring suspense to the viewers.
Common Editing
Fast-paced editing- The fast pace editing makes the viewers watching the thriller film have a suspenseful feeling of what will happen next.
Graphic Match- A graphic image being shown in a thriller film could be very disturbing but then turned into an image that is normal.
Example Films
Uncut Gems- The film "Uncut Gems" is about a jeweler living in New York who is in massive debt, but still continues to make deals with sketchy clients. One of his clients is Kevin Garnette, a Hall of Fame basketball player.
Nightcrawler- This film is about a man who risked his life for filming major crimes and selling the footage to TV stations. He was desperate for an income so he started working the sick job of filming many major crimes.
Common sounds
Classical music- This classical music usually performed by an orchestra gets louder and louder to mess with the audience's minds.
Voiceover- Voiceovers in thrillers are usually the mids of the main character of what he is thinking.
Our group loves the suspense that the thriller genre gives. While watching a thriller film we are always overthinking what will happen next in the film. It activates our brain by making us think harder than ever.
What our group does not like about thriller movies is that it will sometimes make our brain hurt by thinking about a situation too much. We start stressing about what will happen next and if anybody will die soon.
Action- The action genre is usually associated with one protagonist and one antagonist that fight it out during the film. These films are usually made in western culture.
