Genre Research: Knives Out

In order to learn more about our genre, our group watched Knives Out, a murder mystery movie released in 2019. This movie is a nice classic murder mystery, similar to the likes of Clue and Murder on the Orient Express. This movie is what initially drew our interest when researching mystery movies, so we are happy to see it. As we watch this movie, we hope to find elements on the genre, as well as learn a few tricks to make a good mystery. What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? -The Biggest element of genre is of course murder mystery. Knives Out is the latest in a long line of murder mystery movies based on famous novels. Another element of the mystery genre is that the story is from multiple perspectives, instead of just one perspective. What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like? -I really enjoyed the way that each actor has their own version of their story. Each version of the story is represented in the movie, and then the truth is shown later on. To some, this may seem confusing. After all, it is many different representations of the same scene. However, we believe that this is part of the mystery genre. We have already established that mystery movies make you use your brain in order to solve the case before the movie reveals it. I hope that we will be able to recreate, or at least use some ideas inspired by the idea of multiple different stories according to the suspects. What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you? - Something I disliked about the movie is the fact that the murder itself is revealed to the audience rather early on. Personally, I believe these movies should wait until the end to reveal the true killer, leaving time for the audience to solve the mystery for themselves.
